Why is it that black women have such a hard time growing lengthy locks? Black women don't have to struggle with growing our hair. The following 5 myths have contributed to the lack of hair growth in black women.

1. Black Women Can't Grow Hair: This is just an out and out lie. Do other ethnic groups have a genetic monopoly on long hair? Is there something special, or flawed, about black hair that prevents it from growing? Is there some funky gene tied to melanin that prevents hair growth? No, no, and no. Black women can grow hair. Black women do grow hair. Don't you have to go for a touch-up on your relaxer or color every 6 to 8 weeks? Then your hair is growing. The question is how to keep it on your head. Black hair has special needs and can't be treated like straight hair, which leads us straight to our other myth.

2. Only 'Mixed' Women Can Grow Hair: Another long-standing lie. There is a reason that mixed women tend to have longer hair. Sometimes, not all of the times, 'mixed' women have a looser curl. The looser the curl the more that it retains moisture. The more moisture it retains the less breakage occurs. Also, every bend in a curl is an opportunity for breakage. Looser curls have less bends than tight curls. The hair stays on the head and length is achieved. Tight, kinky curls are very dry. They require extra care and attention to achieve long lengths, but with proper cultivation they can grow just as long as looser curls.

3. Greasing the Scalp: This comes from the dryness of kinky hair. In an effort to give moisture the scalp is often coated with Vaseline or mineral oil. While natural oils are an integral part of a black hair growth regimen, petroleum jelly and mineral oil are not. These products coat the scalp and suffocate the hair follicle. Hair growth slows down and sometimes stops completely.

4. Dirty Hair Grows: This is another myth that arose out of the dryness of kinky hair. In an attempt to prevent the dryness we feel after shampooing, many of us stop washing our hair for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. Again, the scalp must be clear of debris for hair follicles to thrive and produce hair. Dirty hair is just that, dirty. And it doesn't grow any faster.

5. Relaxed Hair Can't Grow: Many of us have seen black women with long beautiful dreads and have drawn the conclusion that we must go natural to get length. Relaxed hair is much weaker than natural hair and will break faster. You will get length fast if you go natural. However, if relaxed hair is nurtured and cultivated it will grow just as long, just as fast, as natural hair. All you need to know is how.

Hair rebonding, the latest hair trend among women, can lead to hair loss.

It gives you silky, super straight hair, the way the girls in hair commercials look, and the way Jennifer Lopez and Faye Wong look, but it can also leave you bald.

In one of the case study, a 14-year-old girl had big clumps of hair falling off in the shower a year after the process. Her hair started breaking 2 months after being rebounded. Then another case when a woman is suing her hairdresser for bald patches on her head after a similar treatment. Her scalp started stinging during the process itself and hair fell off in clumps shortly after.

Hair rebonding is a process where the chemical bonds in your hair are broken, rearranged and bonded back again permanently using very strong chemicals. It is one of the most damaging things you can do to your hair.

During rebonding, perming lotion is added to soften the hair and break down its bonds. After this is washed off, hair is placed between 2 metal plates of an electric styling device, which uses heat to pull the hair rod-straight. A neutralizer is then applied to reset the bonds and stabilize the hair.

Hair is irreversibly altered after the perming process. Chemically-treated hair shafts are weaker and fracture more easily. This can lead to hair loss.

Hair become fragile and has to be handled with extreme care after treatment. A natural reflex, like tucking your hair behind your ears or tying your hair in the first month after treatment, can be disaster.

The process can also cause damage and burns to the skin
and scalp. For example hair can be damaged if the various chemicals are left on the hair for too long, or if ironing is done with an iron at higher than 180ºc.

Conventional methods of straightening hair use hair-straightening lotions, which result in dry, brittle, and split-ends prone hair. Rebonding gives you softer hair but higher risks because it uses more toxic chemicals.

At home hair color is a million-dollar business, but there are some services that at-home hair color cannot provide. These services include new and funky techniques used by stylists to create custom styles and looks. But if you know how to do the techniques, you can do them yourself without having to set foot in a salon. Here are just a few of the latest salon color trends and how to do them yourself:

Slicing

Slicing is probably the easiest highlighting technique for you to master at home. The look is very trendy and is identified by a few chunky highlights around the face or in the front of the hair. To use this technique on your hair, make 1, 2, or 3 horizontal partings across the top of the head. The partings should be ¼” to ½” thick and be spaced no less than 1” apart.

Next, work your color through the section of parted hair making sure that you saturate the hair thoroughly. Failure to do so can result in uneven or splotchy color. Process according to directions, rinse, shampoo and dry.

Tipping

Tipping is a great color technique to use if you have short or heavily textured hair. All you need to do is mix up your chosen color according to the directions. Next, use your fingers to apply color to the last ½” of your hair length. Use a comb dipped in color to add extra interest and color to selected parts of your cut. The best places to comb on color is in the bangs and top layers.

Linear

Linear color was made famous by Christina Aguilera. While Christina’s color was wild and contrasting, this technique is also used in more subtle hues to create classic looks. To do linear color at home you will need two different hair colors with the same tonal values. The difference in color can be as little as a shade or two or be drastic.

To start the process of linear color, you first need to create your partings. Begin at the occipital bone (the most prominent bone in the back of the skull) and start a zigzag pattern from ear to ear. The zigzags should be narrow and deep. Pin the top part of your hair up onto the crown. Next, continue the zigzag parting around the perimeter of the head. Note: You should not have a solid line of hair parted around the front of the face and hairline. The parting should leave only a few wisps of hair here and there free.

Using your darker color, apply color to the underneath section of hair and the lower section of hair around the face. Apply the lighter color to the entire upper section. Process according to instructions.

As with all color techniques, the partings are crucial when trying out these tricks for yourself. So, pay extra attention to your partings. If they don’t look right, do them over before applying color.

If you want to create a special and dramatic look for that special occasion, the last thing you want to do is look like a cookie-cutter Barbie doll when it comes to your hairstyle. And the truth is that many of your formal hairstyles were probably just that, exact replicas of styles that were worn on every special occasion for years stretching back into time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can create a different and exciting new updo for each and every formal occasion even if you only know how to do one type of formal hairstyle.

You see, the key to creating a different look lies in the details. You could actually style your hair in a French twist without having the same look twice if you added special touches and elements to your style. Here’s how:

· Straighten instead of curl – In many updos, the free pieces are curled with a curling iron. You can change your look simply by using a flat iron to sleek down these pieces instead of curling them up. You can even alternate using a crimping iron and flat iron to create a dramatic effect.

· Leave pieces free for effect – You can also experiment by leaving different pieces of your updo free. For example: try leaving a ½” section of hair around your complete hairline free from the updo. Pull your hair up into a simple pony tail. Then, take ½” sections of the free hair and crisscross it in a basket-weave style on top of your updo. Pin into place, and you’ve created a unique look with little effort.

· Use accessories – By using simple accessories such as hair extensions of a different color than your hair and ribbons, you can add a lot of interest to your updo. Simply insert small strands of hair or ribbon into your style to create splash of color and drama. You can color coordinate these with your dress or use natural colors that will compliment your hair color.

· Flowers – Inserting a small floral accessory into your updo is also a good idea as long as you don’t take it overboard. Choose very small flowers and use them sparingly. Using too many will make you look like a flower arrangement. Remember, accessories are used to compliment your style, not overpower it.

As Sara (name has been changed), a 38-year-old Hollywood costume designer, strapped on her military-grade rubber gas mask, she looked at her hair: waist-length, perfectly highlighted—but hopelessly dry, frizzy, and brittle. “This is going to be worth it,” she said, watching her friend Karen (named has been changed), a fellow costume designer with similarly damaged hair, secure her own mask. Our Chemical Body Burden

Your body contains between 50 and 75 trillion cells, and each cellular nucleus contains up to 25,000 genes. You breathe in and out 23,000 times a day from the same air that was breathed by the dinosaurs, and your body is 60% water, from the same ever-recycling water that is shared by every being in the world.

When you consider this amazing complexity, it is remarkable how healthy most of us are. When your body receives the nutrients it needs, breathes clean air, drinks pure water, and gets the exercise needed to keep your oxygen pumping and your muscles fit, it should last a hundred years.

It is very disturbing, therefore, to learn that our bodies are being contaminated with a burden of toxic chemicals. In 2003, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York conducted a study with the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in which nine healthy volunteers, none of whom worked with chemicals, had their blood and urine tested. They found 167 industrial chemicals, including:

• 76 chemicals linked to cancer in humans or animals (average 53 per person)
• 94 chemicals that are toxic to the brain and nervous system (average 62)
• 86 chemicals that interfere with the hormone system (average 58)
• 79 chemicals associated with birth defects or abnormal development (average 55) • • 77 chemicals that are toxic to the reproductive system (average 55)
• 77 chemicals that are toxic to the immune system (average 53)

The chemicals came from everyday things such as adhesives, pesticides, food additives, fire retardants, hair sprays, perfumes, lubricants, brake fluid, varnishes, paints, dyes, and cleaning products. A Canadian study came up with similar results, as did a European study including 47 Members of the EU Parliament from 17 nations.

When the EWG looked at the breast milk of 20 nursing mothers, it found levels of brominated fire retardants (PDBEs) from furniture foam, computers, and televisions that were 75 times higher than the average found in recent European studies. The PDBEs accumulate in the food chain and human tissues, and adversely affect brain development and the thyroid.

In 2004, when they looked at the umbilical cord blood of ten newborn babies, they found that 287 chemicals had passed through their mothers’ placentas, averaging 230 contaminants.

The US Centers for Disease Control is also monitoring for environmental chemicals in our bodies. In 2005, as well as finding similar results to the other studies, they found that children had higher levels than adults for residues from second hand smoke, for some pesticides and chemicals such as phthalates that leach from plastics.

The good news is that they observed a steep decline in lead in the children’s blood, following regulations to remove it from gasoline and paint, and in second hand smoke residues, following smoking bans. The bad news is that these studies do not include the effects of ionizing radiation, a known carcinogen that is adding to our body burden.

When the chemicals are not removed, however, they often contribute to cancer. In 2003 a Belgian study found that women with breast cancer were five times more likely than healthy women to have residues of the pesticide DDT in their blood. In 2006 a US study found that men whose bodies were contaminated with PCB 153 were 30 times more likely to have prostate cancer than those who were not contaminated.

Why is this being allowed? A lack of regulatory oversight and constant pressure from industry not to interfere have combined to allow over 100,000 novel chemicals to be used, most of which have never been examined for their health impacts (see p. 30). When chemicals are studied, they are almost never studied in combination with other chemicals, and rarely at the minute levels of contamination that can undermine the body’s exquisitely sensitive hormonal systems.

We should be outraged that this is being allowed. Hazardous substances linked to cancer and other health problems are being found in the tissue of almost every living creature on Earth, and it is up to us to do something to stop this toxic trespass.

Home Made Oil Treatment for Hair

When hair has been abused by too many chemical treatments such as perms, tints, colorings, straightening, daily abuse, or being exposed to a harsh climate it can do with an oil treatment boost to get it into shape, help with split ends and get rid of that dry grass feel and look.

This treatment is more than just a bit messy, but normally can do wonders for abused hair that needs a bit of life, luster and shine and to leave it silky smooth.

The oil treatment uses the following ingredients:

10 ml Coconut oil
10 ml Almond oil
5 ml Evening primrose oil
5 ml Jojoba oil
5 drops Rosemary oil
5 drops Chamomile Roman oil

Using a bain-marie, melt the coconut oil over very low heat (since it is semi-solid at room temperature) and add the almond, evening primrose and jojoba oil. Mix well and let the mixture cool down and then add the essential oils.

Using your fingertips, dip into the oil mixture and gently massage it into your scalp and through the hair. When the entire head has been treated push your hair together and loosely cover it with kitchen plastic wrap (or a clean plastic bag) to protect the towel that you will place over it.

Cover your head with a towel - turban style and leave it on for about 30 minutes. The heat from your scalp will help with the absorption and penetration of the oil, and the towel turban will keep the heat in.

If your hair is in really bad shape, you can use a hot towel for the turban, as it will further help to absorb the oil.

After 30 minutes, before putting any water on your hair, take your shampoo and massage a fair amount into your hair and scalp - this emulsifying action will help remove the excess oil.

Although this is really a messy treatment, it has helped countless people to get their quality of hair back to normal.

It’s whatever elicits and captures this visceral response for you. And if you’ve been tightening your purse strings of late, try any of these budget-friendly, simple, but effective, “beauty” tips:

1. Buy fresh flowers from your local Farmers Market, where they‘re generally less expensive than the flower shop or even the grocery store. Or if an entire bouquet is beyond your current budget, one single rose stem will do the trick. Place them on your nightstand so that these fragrant blooms are the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning and the last thing you see when you retire in the evening.

4. De-clutter and organize your office space or work area. You’ll discover this will do wonders for reducing stress levels (not to mention create a more efficient environment).

5. Take a luxurious candlelit bubble bath before bed. Be sure to play soothing music. Then close your eyes and picture your body soaking away all of the day’s anxiety and worries.

6. Reach out and offer to help someone in need. Run an errand for a neighbor who has been under the weather lately. Call a loved one who has been facing challenges and offer your support or simply a listening ear. Visit your local library and offer to be a volunteer reader.

7. Give yourself permission to indulge in a favorite treat on occasion, and do it without guilt. That tiramisu may be just what your soul has been craving.

So, whether your “beauty” is visual, auditory, sensory, or tactile, begin surrounding yourself daily with whatever that is for you. Be good to yourself. You’ll soon begin to see your days magically transform into more positive and enjoyable experiences. After all, that’s the “beauty” of it.

Learn How to Prevent and Heal Chemical Relaxer Scalp Burns Now!

Every woman dreads relaxer chemical burns, and most of us have battled with a relaxer burn in our lives. Though they tend to happen frequently, relaxer chemical burns are not a normal part of chemical relaxing. In fact, a properly applied chemical relaxer should never cause a burn. Chemical burns can only occur when protective petroleum layers on the scalp are breached. When relaxer chemicals are left on the hair beyond the suggested processing times, or the scalp is not based well prior to relaxer application, scalp burns and hair breakage from over-processing will occur.

When the scalp is burned, it often becomes tender. Scabs soon form, and hair can become caught within the scab and become "glued" to the scalp. So what can you do to prevent and treat chemical relaxer burns?

Tips for Preventing Chemical Burns

1.) Do not scratch your scalp prior to applying your relaxer. Scalp irritation always leads to burns. Though it seems like your scalp gets its itchiest just before a relaxer, fight the temptation to scratch your scalp!

2.) Avoid washing the hair the day prior to chemically relaxing. A freshly washed scalp is highly susceptible to burning from relaxer chemicals.

3.) Avoid brushing or hard parting your hair and scalp, especially around the fragile hairline prior to the relaxer.

4.) Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly or grease to the hair and scalp to protect them from harsh relaxer chemicals. By increasing the thickness of the petroleum barrier, harsh chemicals are less likely to damage the hair and scalp.

5.) Process your hair for the manufacturer's suggested time for your hair type. Even a few moments beyond the suggested time could result in a burned scalp and lifeless, overprocessed hair.

6.) Thoroughly rinse and neutralize all traces of relaxer from your hair and scalp. This is critical. Allow your neutralizer to sit on your hair and scalp undisturbed for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. This will give your neutralizer a chance to bring your scalp's pH down to stop the relaxer from continuing to work on the scalp.

7.) If you are visiting a stylist, be sure to lift your head at the shampoo bowl as your relaxer is being rinsed. Often times, the uncomfortable angle of the bowl makes us want to rest our heads and necks on the rim for relief-- but this can cause over-processing and chemical burns in the nape area of the head. Make sure this area is rinsed thoroughly,

8.) Let your stylist know if you are susceptible to burning, and inform him/her immediately if you begin to feel the common, initial tingle that often precedes full scale burning.

Treating Chemical Burns

Because the scalp skin is like other skin on the body, typical burn ointments like Neosporin will help heal and condition it. Additionally, you may apply Vitamin E oil or Aloe vera gel to the burn to calm redness and irritation. If your hair is stuck within the scab, apply petroleum jelly to help soften the scabbed skin and gently attempt to free a few strands at a time.

Deep conditioning the hair will also help soften your scab so that it gently falls away.

No-lye relaxers use a product with a higher pH to change the shape of the hair strands by breaking the disulfide bonds that hold the protein brills. Chemical hair relaxers change the basic structure of the hair shaft. The chemical dissolves and penetrates the outer shell covering the hair, called the cortex or cortical layer. It breaks the internal bonds of the hair shaft. This stripping away of the outer layer of the hair shaft and breaking of the bonds weakens the hair.
Once this process is performed, it is irreversible. Chemical hair straighteners are very harsh, and they can burn the scalp or the skin. It is also very easy to “over process” already relaxed hair. This over processing usually results in hair breaking. For this reason, chemical hair relaxers should be reapplied (only to new hair growth) after about 8 weeks.

Cases of chemical hair relaxer being ingested by small children have resulted in severe burns to the esophagus, mouth and face. For this reason, chemical hair straighteners should never be used on small children. Children should be teens before applying any kind of permanent hair relaxer because they are still growing, and their hormones have not finished determining what their ultimate hair type will be.

Why Iron Deficiency Causes Hair Loss

When you are told that your blood test showed your iron levels to be within the correct reference range, it may not mean that the range was correct for hair regrowth.

Hair loss studies:

During a study, 153 women who had been diagnosed with telogen effluvium (rapid shedding) were examined. 72 percent of women in the pre-menopausal group were found to have iron deficiency as the cause of Telogen Effluvium.

Reference ranges are around 40ng/mL. However this needs to be higher if you are looking to regrow lost hair.

While iron deficiency is the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in pre-menopausal women, medications and hormone changes are the most common cause of Telogen Effluvium in post-menopausal women.

Besides being a trigger for Telogen Effluvium where the majority of hair shedding occurs, iron deficiency can also be the most likely underlying cause when hair loss is subtle; slowly thinning out over many months or even years. This is more common among women of childbearing age due to menstruation and pregnancy. Iron is found mainly in the blood, and accordingly substantial amounts can be lost in childbirth.

Iron is also involved in the oxygenation of your body's red blood cells. Iron play a significant role in various body functions, but it is also essential for sustaining normal growth and maintenance of hair.

In order for the body to maintain a sufficient balance of iron, the amount excreted must be replaced by the amount ingested in the diet. When the amount of iron used exceeds the amount we absorbe from our food, the body has no other option than to draw upon our limited reserves. The fall of iron stores normally passes through several stages: lowered iron stores, iron depletion and iron deficiency anemia.

Only about 10% of ingested iron is absorbed and this is dependent on the type of food in the diet. Certain foods may inhibit the absorption of iron, tea and coffee, bran and egg albumin.

Whereas other foods may enhance the absorption of iron, i.e. vitamin C, and flesh foods. (The Vitamin C and iron rich food must be eaten at the same time).

In meat, 65% of iron is bound to the heme molecule (from hemoglobin and myoglobin), which is relatively easily absorbed. The rest of the iron in meat and all iron in plants is non-heme iron which is nore difficult to absorb.

Hair follicles are known to contain ferritin, and when the circulating stores of ferritin decline then these stores are called upon to ensure support for more essential cells, such as bone marrow.

The loss of this ferritin from the follicle cells can affect the ability of the hair to grow. This leads to the development of fine non pigmented hair.

Basically, the number one reason why many women struggle with growing long, strong hair is that they continue to use products which just aren't suited towards their hair type. Far too many women are using products which contain the following ingredients, without realising they contribute to the lack of moisture which causes brittle hair and breakage over a long period of time:

* sulfates
* alcohols
* glycols
* silicones
* petroleum based hair "greases"
* any mineral oil based hair lotions

Any woman serious about wanting to grow African American hair long needs to avoid products containing those ingredients as much as possible.

Instead, you should opt for more natural products. Personally, I don't have favorite brands - but there are a few decent options out there, just head to your local store and see what range they do. Trusting What You Can Not

Faith is a big part of living a successful life and being a successful entrepreneur. My secret is deciding to have faith in myself more than any type of external force. Notice I said the word “decision” because that is where it starts. My journey has taught me that I always intuitively know which direction to head next and when I look to find answers outside of myself, I always end up off the path a bit. It took me until I was well into my thirties to be able to trust others because of not having established trust in any form whatsoever during my childhood. For me, I had to have my own family and connect with the love I had for them to be able to trust myself and others.

The deeper reason it is important to be able to trust is because your heart must be full and complete in order to bring out the passion and joy for yourself and others in your life. The feeling of trust will penetrate the walls surrounding a broken heart, the pain from being alone or feeling alone. Just like you, others have been in the dark and are searching for what you now know to be true. They are searching to believe in themselves in the darkest moments of their being. This is trust at its core.

So let’s talk about a few ways to learn to trust yourself so you can be empowered to live the life of your dreams which could mean grow a very profitable business, or have a huge family, author a series of books, or travel the world and meet exciting people—shoot your dream life could include all of these—mine does!

Trust in Balance

If you are moving in “auto-pilot” the heart will not shine and the days will cast heaviness in the center of your body. Balance will provide the base of being grounded to the truth. Believe in the love you have for yourself and you will come from the deepest parts of your soul.

The fastest way to develop a trusting relationship with balance is connect with nature. This will bring the balance between work, family, love, and life. In this connection you will build the foundation that will hold you up in any storm. So each day work on getting out and just seeing the beauty of nature around you. This will help make the connection stronger and remind you of just how small we are in the universe. The more you bring in nature and hold the thought of each molecule and atom circling in your path, the more balanced you will become.

Now, I am aware that I live in San Antonio, Texas and we are blessed with nine months of beautiful weather each year, so I know I am able to connect more often than some—if you live in an area that isn’t as mild as where I live, do whatever you can to create the sounds and smells of nature in your home during the cold months.

Trust in Power

True power will emerge when you are in service. All you have to do is trust that the power is given to you to serve and that if you serve, the world is abundant. This doesn’t mean when running a business, you don’t charge for products and services. You can’t produce quality products and services and really help your customers if there isn’t an exchange of money. Trusting in your own power to lead others through your products and services is the inner structure that allows the new ideas and the new beginnings to come forth.

Trust in Energy

The innocence of childhood energy is what we tap into when we are at our center. Remember the feeling of being with one self and no cares or a negative thought to speak of. Trust that this energy still exists within you and allow yourself to bring this calmness into your thinking when you are taking on the biggest obstacles and the biggest conflicts. Tapping into this energy will help you to reduce stress and become heart centered. This is the constant energy that is felt by others so they can rejoice in their knowing of this power within them. And knowing about this energy will help you break the barriers of negative energy in any room.

I have found that our truest sense of self comes from just trusting in our energy and the energy signals we get from others. Your goal is to have no barriers or boundaries where energy is concerned and just be with the energy of each moment. In the present moment, there is no fear, no doubt, just you in your power and experiencing all of life’s joys that are presented to you each day.

Trust in the Journey

A lot of people get stuck in their own journey. They relive the worst parts of it over and over again in a very unloving way. It becomes a vicious circle of inner self disappointment that circles them right back around to the same place again. I’ve been there and I get it.

Instead of getting stuck on your journey, take the mistakes you made and will make and love yourself as if you were a child who is learning. Even as adults, in some areas of growth we are only children and we must be gentle with ourselves to truly grow through the journey. What I know to be true is that people are searching for a place of belonging and validation. You can create this for them by being a leader who spreads passion and love.

Remember that your journey is a gift because it provides the wisdom you will need to go out and create positive change in the world. So your goal is to learn from your past and do better as soon as you know better. Be strong and have courage to change. Trust me, I know how hard it is to move past a dysfunctional patterns that have become comfortable. But the rewards of doing so allow you to stand outside of yourself and get a good look at whom you have been and where you are now. What surfaces is love. And now you can shine this love for others…. You see, without the journey, you would not have this gift.

Because of my journey (see chapter one), I was able to survive the darkness and now shine a light for others who are now in the shadows of darkness themselves. They need help from someone who has been there and conquered the fear of internal and external chaos. I do this by casting light on dark situations and allowing my words to fill the gap between doubt and love. I invite you to find your passions (your gifts) and cast light for others too.

Studies indicate that two out of three patients with mild to moderate carpal tunnel symptoms were able to avoid surgery by using these exercises – twice the success rate of other nonsurgical treatments. These exercises are more successful in patients with mild symptoms, and are not recommended for patients with severe symptoms. Patients who have persistent symptoms despite these exercises should discuss surgical treatment with their physician. * Straighten both wrists and relax fingers.

* Make a tight fist with both hands.

* Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for a count of 5.

* Straighten both wrists and relax fingers, for a count of 5.

The exercise should be repeated 10 times.

Then let your arms hang loosely at the side and shake them for a few seconds.

ARE FOAM AND BUBBLES WORTH BAD HEALTH?

The Truth about Sodium Lauryl Sulphate

Do you enjoy a shampoo with a rich lather? A shaving cream that really foams? How about relaxing in a tub full of bubbles? These may seem like some of life’s simple, innocent pleasures…until you look at WHAT is causing all that foam and lather. Once you find out, you may decide it’s not so simple or pleasurable after all.

Check the labels of your shampoo, soap, facial cleanser, shaving cream, body wash, or shower gel: Do you see either Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) listed? Or one of their cousins: Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Myreth Sulphate, etc.? Most manufacturers use these anionic detergents because they produce a lot of foam very inexpensively. But SLS is so strong that it’s also used to scrub garage floors. Worse, it has been proven to cause cancer in the long run. And the American College of Toxicology says SLS stays in the body up to five days. Other studies show it easily penetrates the skin and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, liver, the lungs, and the brain. Yet SLS is found in most cleansing, foaming products—even in some toothpastes! (Note: SLS may be disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetical explanation “comes from coconut.” Let’s save the coconut from defamation of character!)

One woman who examined labels found that all the shampoos she checked had SLS—even health food store brands. Many listed Sodium Laureth Sulphate as the first ingredient on the label, meaning it’s the single most prevalent ingredient. So this lady called one company to complain that their product contains a substance that will cause people to have cancer. Their response was, “Yeah, we knew about it, but there’s nothing we can do about it because we need that substance to produce foam.”

Try contacting some manufacturers yourself: The typical responses might be:

(1) Denial: “It’s completely safe.”

(2) Avoidance: “You’ll have to talk to someone else” or “We can’t talk
about that.”

(3) Ignorance: “I’ve never heard about that.”

Most people selling products with this and other harmful ingredients really just don’t know. The FDA has a GRAS list (Generally Regarded As Safe), and almost everything is on there, so most people selling these products just focus on the marketing hype and what the product is supposed to do for skin (clean it, make it feel soft, etc.). Sadly, of the 7000 ingredients used on the skin, only 5-6 have been tested for LONG-TERM safety, and none have been tested TOGETHER. Currently, 125 are strongly suspected carcinogens, 20 cause adverse nervous system reactions, and 25 are connected to birth defects.

So why exactly is SLS so bad?

Here are what tests show about Sodium Lauryl Sulphate:

(1) SLS PENETRATES EYES AND TISSUES. Tests show that SLS can penetrate into the eyes as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.) and shows long-term retention in those tissues. Especially when used in soaps and shampoos, there is an immediate concern relating to the penetration of SLS into the eyes and other tissues. This is especially important in infants, where considerable growth is occurring, because a much greater uptake occurs by tissues of younger eyes, and SLS changes the amounts of some proteins in cells from eye tissues. Tissues of young eyes may be more susceptible to alteration by SLS[1]

(2) SLS FORMS NITRATES: When SLS is used in shampoos and cleansers containing nitrogen-based ingredients, it can form carcinogenic nitrates that can enter the blood stream in large numbers. They can cause eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions.[2]

(3) SLS PRODUCES NITROSAMINES (potent carcinogens that cause the body to absorb nitrates at higher levels than eating nitrate-contaminated food like hot dogs or lunch meat): Dr. David H. Fine, the chemist who uncovered NDELA contamination in cosmetics, estimates that a person would be applying 50 to 100 micrograms of nitrosamine to the skin each time he or she used a nitrosamine-contaminated cosmetic. Madame C.J. Walker ( http://www.madamcjwalker.com/) made the first successful black-produced hair care products in the 1920s. That name and that line of products was popular well into the 1940’s. Overton Cosmetics entered the market in the late 1940s after World War II. The Overton family owned one of the first black-owned grocery and drugstore chains and their products were sold in predominantly black neighborhoods, including nationwide chains like Woolworth's. It was one of the first black-produced products to be sold in a nationwide chain store.

In the 1950’s, the Johnson Products Company of Chicago, came on the scene with the Ultra Sheen line of products. Johnson produced the first successful hair relaxer for use by women, which became widely popular in black beauty salons. It was so successful that white-owned firms took a keen interest. At that time, there were two other black companies producing hair relaxers, following Johnson's lead. One was Nelson, who produced a relaxer called Bantu (that later was produced by Johnson), the founder of which was a partner of George Johnson when the latter was forming Johnson Products, and a relaxer line called Deluxol.

Revlon wanted to enter this market, but they did not want to risk their name on a uncertain venture. Therefore, they bought out the black-owned Deluxol and tested the market under that name. The test proved to be highly successful, and Revlon started producing the relaxer under their name. With the power of the Revlon name, Deluxol became very popular, and seriously put a dent in Johnson's market share. Revlon was the first white-owned firm to enter the black hair care industry, and other firms soon followed.

A Short Menu of Profitable Direct Mail Formats

One of the beauties of direct mail is that it allows you to send people just about anything you can print. Your creative options are virtually endless. And while the standard envelope package is usually considered the most effective, there are plenty of other formats you can test.

Often an alternate format will increase response. But even if your response ends up being lower, many formats let you deliver your message at a reduced cost while maintaining enough response to offset the difference and give you more net profit. Here are a few format ideas:

* Reduce costs with a self-mailer. It offers low cost and a quick read, good for quickly recognized content. It also helps speed response because it’s not as in-depth as a full package and looks more urgent and newsy. To make a self-mailer work at peak efficiency, combine elements of a standard direct mail package and a print ad. Include a strong headline in bold type, copy in easy-to-read sections, strong visuals, clear offer, reply card, toll-free number, message or mini-letter printed near the recipient’s address, feature list, testimonials, guarantee, and other elements as needed.

* Signal exclusivity with an invitation. To make an offer special, you can issue an invitation in the appropriate format, usually a smaller envelope and letter on high-quality paper. This works best for offers targeted to high-income prospects, professionals, and executive level positions; for events such as conferences, meetings, and presentations; or for offers that need a quality feel.

* Add urgency with a telegram. This is a good idea that is, unfortunately, wildly overused. It can be little more than an envelope design, such as “Urgent Gram,” “Speed Gram,” or some variation. Or it might be an envelope and letter combo resembling an actual telegram printed on yellow paper with tractor-feed holes down the sides of the letter. One way to make this format work is to create your own urgent-looking envelope for fulfillment materials. This allows the envelope to get noticed and assures that the contents will be relevant and interesting instead of boilerplate.

* Create an official look with a snap-pack. This format is often used for official notices or statements, so it gives your ad message the same feel. And because the recipient has to rip open the edge of the envelope and pull out the contents, it creates involvement. It’s good for generating inquiries or for organizations with recognizable and trusted names. It has been used with particular success in the nonprofit sector to deliver what appears to be an urgent, cheap appeal for funds.

* Generate quick leads with a postcard. Direct sales are possible with postcards but only for simple offers, such as magazine subscriptions. They are much better for building traffic for local retail or for generating inquiries for familiar services, such as real estate or carpet cleaning. However, because response is so easy, lead quality is often low. But it’s worth testing. Just remember to telegraph your message with a clear benefit headline, strong and tangible offer, a picture of what you’re offering, lean copy, and a bold call to action.

* Use dimensional mailings cautiously. Boxes, bags, tubes, folders, and other unusual formats are great for getting attention. But while there are plenty of examples of successful campaigns, these formats are usually misused, wasting money on a novel format when a standard format could deliver a more powerful message and net a greater response or profit. Most of the dimensional mailings I have seen are simply a way for ad agencies to jack up their fee and cover up the fact that they don’t have anything to say about a product or service.

* When in doubt, use an envelope package. The classic direct mail package consists of an outer envelope (usually #10, 6″x9″, or 9″x12″), a letter, brochure, reply card or order form, maybe one or more inserts, and a reply envelope. The reason this format is a standard is that it has been developed, tested, and perfected over many years. And it works. Test other formats but don’t be different just to be different.

* Test formats head-to-head. The important point in format testing is to keep the offer, copy, graphics, and all creative elements as similar as possible so that you are testing the format itself and not a new creative treatment. And always test a new format in a head-to-head mailing with the old format. Never make a change until you have proven results.

Today I want to target the salon website and give you a couple tips on how you can use it to capture new clients that are the ideal match for your salon.

Now don’t get upset by what I say but try to see this from your clients point of view. Most websites I see it looks as though we in the industry are trying to impress each other with our talent rather than appealing to the clients who we are wanting to do business with. They are usually contain photos of young pretty girls, thin girls, who have perfect hair and skin and are wearing suggestive clothing sporting hair no one would ever wear on the street. Being in the beauty industry I can truly appreciate and admire the artists talent but how does the client perceive this and will it capture their attention long enough to browse your site or intimidate them? I also see salons trying to sell to the client by telling them how wonderful they are rather than giving the client what they want.

If you have a lot of clients and your public profile is all your website is designed for then by all means put up the flashy pictures of hairstyles and impress people with the talent of your team. But if your primary purpose is to attract clients with your site then build it to work for you How do you do this?

1. Know who you are looking to attract by knowing the profile of the person who will see value in being a client of your salon…your ideal client.

2. Capture their attention by giving them something they will value.

3. Gain their trust that you are the expert to care for their needs.

What to include with your strategy:

Include a very brief “tip” of the week so visitors see value in returning to your site. I know a salon blog can serve this purpose as well but clients don’t always spend enough time roaming your site to get the good stuff, offer it right there on the home page.

This “tip” when promoted right is your golden opportunity to subtly introduce them to your salon brand while giving them a piece of valuable information. For example; if your salon is famous for doing corrective color, share with your visitors just how a proper color consultation should be done to ensure client satisfaction. Be careful not to say “this is how we do it here” but adapt the tone of “look for this is the salon you choose to care for your tresses”.

Have an opt in box where you can collect their name and email address. These days people are reluctant to give out this information for a simple newsletter so you must make the offer so appealing that they can’t wait to get what you are offering. Again, if you have done the work to know your ideal client and position the offer as something they WANT, not need they will be happy to provide this information in exchange for the gift.

Your gifts could include; hair and makeup photo shoots for company portfolios if you are attracting corporate clients. Couple massage lessons for the active dual income earners or a series of how to videos to keep the glow in aging skin if your ideal client is the mature generation.

*Remember when making your offer that it is purely a gift that you know will change their lives. Once you give them value they will be more inclined to buy from you and now that you have their name and email address you can follow up with salon specials, promotions and events that will bring them through the door.

Black Hair Care: How to Take Care of Cornrows

Cornrows and braids are one of those timeless styles that have crossed all gender and ethnic gaps. In fact, nothing is more beautiful than heedful of intricate braids and rows and no two styles are exactly alike. That is why more and more people are choosing to express themselves and their individual style through braiding and rowing.

But as with all styles, cornrows come with their own special challenges and problems. One of the most obvious problems associated with any tight braiding technique is breakage. While black hair has fewer tendencies to break than Caucasian hair, it can still take a great deal of abuse if the braids are not done and cared for properly. In addition to breakage, you can also experience dull, frizzy and dry hair as a result of wearing cornrows or braids.

To avoid all of these drawbacks and to keep your braids looking shiny and neat, follow the following care tips:

· Choose your artist wisely – As with any artistic field, braiders come in many levels of expertise. Be sure to choose one that has been in the business for a good while. Also, ask to see sample photos of the stylist’s work. This will give you a good idea about their level of expertise.

· Grow hair to proper length - In order to get a good braid, your stylist has to have enough hair to work with. A good rule of thumb to follow on length is 10cm for straight hair and a minimum of 5 cm for curly hair.

· Cleanse without disrupting – Granted, shampooing your hair with all of those rows and braids is not an easy task. To clean down to the scalp without disrupting your style you can use a shower massager or dental water pick.

· Wrap to prevent frizz and breakage – When you’re sleeping, your hair comes into constant contact with your pillow and your movements cause friction and tension to be applied to your braids. This can result in fly away hair, frizz and breakage. To avoid this simply wrap your head with a do rag or cloth before sleeping.

· Keep salon appointments – If your braid artist tells you to get a trim every 6 weeks, do so. And if he or she tells you to get your braids redone within a certain time frame, be sure that you do. This will help keep your braids looking neat and fresh.
